Appropriately dubbed the Superbowl of fashion, the annual Met Ball attracts every major celebrity who in turn spares no expense to ensure that their haute couture formal attire is befitting of the $25,000 ticket to this extravagant event. Also known as the Met Gala, and formally called the Costume Institute Gala, this event is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s Costume Institute in New York City. It marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. Each year’s event celebrates the theme of that year’s Costume Institute exhibition and the exhibition sets the tone for the formal dress of the night. Guests are of course expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit. This affair has been held at the Met since 1946 and its guest list of personalities from the arts, fashion, high-society, film and music industry totals 650 to 700 guests. It is considered to be the fashion industry’s premier annual red carpet event and this year’s theme is “China: Through the Looking Glass”. This theme is intended to showcase Western fashion’s collective fantasy of China.

Fashion however is not the only extravagance at the Met Ball 2015. The ornate decor that was designed to reflect this year’s theme is equally note-worthy. From the flower selection to the table settings, each and every decorative element of this gala is scrutinized until it perfectly fits the theme.

Let’s start with the breathtaking grand entrance to the ball. A beautiful carpet with pastel patterns cover the grand staircase all the way from the bottom to the top with the perfect complement of thick walls of bamboo shoots lining both sides. Not only is it a perfect representation of the overall decor theme, but it also most certainly sets the tone for what is to come when the esteemed guests step into the grandiose space.

Once the guests ascend this opulent staircase, they enter into an open space at the centre of which lies the grand masterpiece of this year’s event: A 12,500 pound chinoiserie vase made entirely of roses. Undoubtedly a fragrant sight to behold. It is so impressive in magnitude that Vogue Magazine hired a photographer to put together a time lapse video of the construction of this giant decorative piece.

Spread throughout the space surrounding this breathtaking decor creation are tall cherry blossom trees. A staple in Chinese decor themes, these floral trees make the entire look that much more complete.

After the guests have enjoyed taking their commemorative selfies in front of the giant vase of roses, they are ushered into the grand hall for dinner. When they first enter this space they are greeted by elegant, deep red flower centrepieces, on each of the tables, accentuated by wisteria hanging from the ceiling.

A photo of Rihanna performing on stage at the event that night also perfectly shows the amount of wisteria hanging from the ceiling above her.

Speaking of the stage, even the podiums were the perfect blend of gold and light green with Chinese lettering that again is the perfect complement to this year’s Met Ball 2015 theme.

The fact that every decor element is scrutinized down to the smallest detail is certainly no exaggeration. In keeping with the Chinese inspired decor theme, the Chiavari chairs have a bamboo frame and sea-foam green cushions to match the colour of the table linen. The embroidered tablecloths are topped with coral glass charger plates that are colourfully painted with intricate designs and rimmed in gold accompanied by silk napkins in a blush pink. Gold being the perfect complementing metallic colour to the light jade green table linen, naturally even the cutlery is golden down to the salt and pepper shakers. Place cards are in a matching, slightly darker shade of green. This perfect marriage of vibrant reds, gold metallics and muted greens and corals create a vision of picture perfect decor.

There is no contesting the fact that the haute couture worn by the celebrity guests remains the topic of conversations long after the Met Ball is over. This year however, the team at Finer Events simply couldn’t resist shining the spotlight on this extravagant decor theme where clearly every element was pure decor perfection. It surely goes without saying that our entire decor team will be waiting with great excitement to see what new decor inspiration the Costume Institute Gala will have in store for us next year.
